Even though its economy ranks third in the Eurozone (after Germany and France), Italy has been hit harder than other European countries by the recent economic and financial crisis. In addition, by being located along the Central Mediterranean route, Italy has been particularly affected by the current refugee crisis, which put further pressure on the already difficult socio-economic situation. The country’s most important industrial center is Turin, which is Italy’s fourth largest population center. The city is also the home of the Fiat car company. Its population peak was reached in 1975, when Turin accounted for 1.2 million inhabitants. As many other car producing centers worldwide, Turin’s industrial base underwent deep restructuring in the 1980s and 1990s. During this period, the city experienced significant population shrinkage. Today, the city has some 890,000 inhabitants while the newly established “Città Metropolitana” accounts for 2.3 million. Facing with structural change, the city has embraced strategic planning in the mid-1990s (three strategic plans have been drafted and adopted since then) in order to define future socio, economic, and territorial goals, as well as the strategies for achieving them. The selection of Turin as host city for the 2006 Winter Olympics accelerated the ongoing process of economic diversification and improved the local infrastructure systems. However, these interventions left behind huge debts that, in recent years, have led the City of Turin on the brink of bankruptcy.

Zeit und Ort

Against this background, the F-Projekt will take the form of a group work in which students conduct a study on the peripheral area of “Corso Marche”. Corso Marche is an arterial road that stretches along the municipal boundary of Turin and the first-belt suburbs in the western part of the metropolitan area. It was identified as the “central axis” for metro Turin by the 1996 Turin Master Plan due to the high concentration of so-called “strategic areas” located along its path. The main idea was to foster economic transformation and urban regeneration along the axis in the attempt of counterbalance the de-urbanization process that was affecting the metropolitan area.

The F-Projekt will be carried out in cooperation with students and professors from the Università di Torino and the Politecnico di Torino. Filed work in Turin will take place in March 2018.

Working language of the F-Projekt is English (Italian language skills are useful, but not required).
