M.Sc. Modul 3: Case study research: Design and implementation

Betreuung: Dr. Letizia Imbres (ROP)

In spatial planning as well as in many social science disciplines, cases studies represent one of the most important research methodologies. Associated with qualitative research approaches, a case study provides a tool for researchers to gain in-depth understanding of a complex phenomenon within its context using a variety of data sources (Baxter & Jack 2008). More specifically, according to Yin (2018), case study design is particularly indicated when: 1) the study is geared towards answering ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions; 2) the focus is on a contemporary set of events on which the researcher can exert little or no control; 3) investigation of a particular phenomenon (i.e. the ‘case’) is carried out in depth and within its real-world context; 4) the boundaries between the phenomenon and the context may not be clearly discernible.

In line with these premises, the seminar aims to introduce students to the key elements and procedures for designing and implementing qualitative case study research. To achieve this, on the one hand, a review of the ontological and theoretical aspects underpinning qualitative research will be undertaken, along with an examination of the main methodological challenges posed by case study research (e.g. case selection, data collection and analysis, development of causal and descriptive arguments, generalization and theory building). On the other hand, to facilitate the assimilation of new concepts and techniques, a ‘hands-on’ approach will be adopted that allows participants to choose a single case or multiple cases of their interest which serve as application examples throughout the seminar sessions.

Leistungsnachweis
The seminar is open to both doctoral and master’s students. The requirement for passing the course and earning 4 ECTS credits is evidence of active participation, which includes giving short presentations on the selected case studies, as well as making a positive contribution to group work and class discussions. By submitting an individual essay at the end of the seminar, master’s students can acquire 1 additional ECTS credit.

Bemerkung
The working language of the seminar is English.
